AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - The longest serving police chief in history of the Amarillo Police Department has died.
Jerry Neal was the Chief of Police in Amarillo from February 16, 1981 until March 31, 2007. Chief Neal was the assistant chief in Norman, Oklahoma before he was hired in Amarillo.
He oversaw major changes in improvements within the department, including involvement in the Special Crimes Unit, partnering with the Bridge Children's Advocacy Center, creating the original bicycle mounted officers of the Community Oriented Police/Problem Solving Unit, and more.
The Amarillo Police Department says, in his 26 years with the department, Chief Neal helped modernize and shape the department into what it is today. He is remembered as a fair boss, a great leader and a good friend.
His legacy at the department lives on through his son, Officer Kent Neal.
