With Christmas right around the corner, the Salvation Army of Amarillo wants to ensure that every child can receive a complete Christmas, and you can help by stopping by the Westgate Mall and adopting an angel.

"It speaks of the caring of our community. It speaks of those that might be without hope to have what every family thinks and dreams of the holidays can become a reality," said Salvation Army Major Harvey Johnson.

The Salvation Army kicked off its annual Angel Tree Christmas program today. Angels were present, carols were sung, and the official red ribbon was cut.

"If you want to participate we'd love for you to do it. We're getting started today," said Johnson. "We have four weeks, but don't wait until the end. Last year we ran out of angels about the third week, so hurry and get your angels."

Picking an angel isn't the only way you can get involved. Volunteers are also needed to man the table at the mall, as well work at the gift distribution center.

"I just think it's a tremendous area to volunteer and give of your time. Not everybody has the budget to afford to buy a lot of presents for kids, but if you can give of your time, it's just as valuable," said volunteer Katie Ahlbom.

As you pick out angels please be mindful that teenagers on the program often miss out or are simply over-looked.

"Christmas is for the children. And along with the lessons about Jesus, and the time of the season, each child needs the joy of having a present," said Ahlbom.
