AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) -

Nationwide, stores are closing at an alarming rate as the rise of e-commerce outlets like Amazon continue to make it harder for traditional retailers to attract customers to their stores.

"It's time. There are too many people using their computers and not buying things from stores," said A&D Bookstore Owner Elnora Dennis. "Therefore, we just don't have enough business."

Dennis plans on closing her store in two months after being open in Amarillo for over sixty years.

"There are sites out there that we used to order from, but it's not the same experience to me," said fourth grade teacher Ambra Coapland. "So we can get it still, but going into a place that has everything you need as a teacher is much easier than having to search and remember what you need to replace and what you need for next year and all of that."

A&D Bookstore is the latest store in the area to close it doors after servicing local teachers for decades. According to CNN Money, 2017 is the second-worst year on record for store closings. The shift to online shopping is a big part of the problem.

"Sadly, with the way education has changed though, I feel like that is the thing we are not able to utilize as much. Standards have changed. It doesn't allow bookstores to keep up with the changes fast enough," says reading intervention teacher Alicia Smith.

Once A&D closes for good, Mardel will be one of the only local store options for teachers to shop at.
