AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - Amarillo officials are reminding residents not to burn vegetation inside city limits after a structure fire this morning.
Around 11:30 this morning, the Amarillo Fire Department responded to a fire at the Hampton Inn and Suites located at 6901 I-40 West.
Crews arrived on the scene to find smoke coming from the ceiling of the pool room of the hotel.
Officials say an employee had been using a torch to burn leaves and weeds around the building when a wall caught on fire.
Employees of the hotel used three fire extinguishers in an attempt to put out the fire, but they were unsuccessful.
The fire traveled inside an exterior wall and up to the roof of the pool room. Firefighters had to tear away parts of the exterior wall and roofing material to access the entire fire.
The fire was determined to be under control at 1:24 this afternoon.
The Amarillo Fire Marshal's Office ruled the fire as accidental and is reminding residents that burning to remove vegetation is always illegal inside the city limits.
Damage from the fire is estimated to be around $50,000.
