AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) -

Local families who may be struggling this upcoming holiday season can begin applying for extra help this week.

The Salvation Army's Angel Tree program began accepting applications today. The income based program provides families with infants to 18-year-olds in need with gifts this Christmas.

"To be approved for the Angel Tree, you need to bring your children's birth certificates. If they're over 15, we also need proof they're in school. We need your ID and social security cards if you have them," said Director of Social Services, Jennifer Santer.

Last year, the Salvation Army provided 2,015 gifts through their Angel Tree program. They're expecting more gifts this year as several local families live paycheck-to-paycheck.

"Good kids get Christmas gifts, so I think it just really helps the kids to feel like they're a part of the community," said Santer. "They're able to go back to school and talk about what they got Christmas like everyone else."

Business and church groups can also be Business Angel Troop groups. This morning, over 50 families already applied for assistance.

"People can come in from the community, pick an angel off the tree, adopt it and pick up some of the items and return it to the Westgate Mall," said Public Relations and Development Director, Stephanie Pena.

The Salvation Army says they're expecting residents of Amarillo to give back once again this holiday season.

"We have families that come in that are just in tears, because without the Salvation Army they wouldn't be able to have presents for their family. We are providing gifts for people who come from low-income families," says Pena. "We don't want people to have to decide between a utility bill or paying rent."

To apply visit the Salvation Army Church at 2101 S. Van Buren between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday, or between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. Monday and Thursday. Applications will reopen on November 6 through November 10 and follow the same time schedule.

If you'd like more information on how to apply or adopt an angel, contact The Salvation Army of Amarillo on Facebook or call them at (806) 373-6631.

The Angel Tree will open at the Westgate Mall beginning on November 13.
