New proposition to help Potter County Fire Department

AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) -

County Commissioners just approved a proposition for the upcoming November election. If approved, the proposition would help the Potter County Fire Department.

The proposition is to create a County Assistance District, which would raise the sales tax for the areas outside of Amarillo.

The proposed increase would be two cents of every dollar.

Pat Fitzpatrick, Assistant Chief of the Potter County Fire Department, says the money from the sales tax would help them buy new equipment.

"We still have trucks that are 1992, and they're just not as reliable," said Fitzpatrick, "To keep our fleet up and to provide the level of coverage that we want to be able to provide, we need to be able to replace our trucks better."

Assistant Fire Chief George Samples says this proposal is cheaper than the alternative, which would be raising property taxes.

The proposed sale tax increase would slash the cost for tax payers because visitors of Potter County would contribute as well.

"This way, people passing through on the highways will also be contributing towards funding the fire department," said Samples.

Samples added, "In the long run, we will be able to use less of the taxpayers money for the infrastructure of the fire department."

The proposition for the two percent sales tax will be on the ballot for the November 7th election.
