Our Perspective on rain affecting our area

AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - A few years ago we were in a drought, and this year we have had an overage of rain.

Rain in the forecast is what we have heard for over three weeks now. I'm not complaining, but it is interesting how it changes the mood and flow of the Panhandle.

We are used to a dry climate and not the distraction or the difference in our day that rain causes.

Let's look at a few things that are impacted by the rain levels this year.

The streams and rivers in the area have more water flowing in them and the lakes are filling up.

Lake Meredith's water level is about 71 feet and going up, that is seven feet more than two years ago.

With water comes decisions. Do we pump Lake Meredith for drinking water?

One side may say, the new level has brought many more people out to play, boat sales are up, tourism dollars are up and Lake communities are benefiting.

The other side is that the water will evaporate and we can use it for our water supplies and save our precious groundwater for another dry season.

My Perspective today is, I'm glad to have the water and glad we have these types of discussions ahead of us, instead of the hard discussions we were having when we were so low on water.

The smart people of the area will make the right decisions and we will prosper because with water we all are better off than without.
