AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - Two drivers, including an Amarillo Police Department officer, were taken to the hospital with minor injuries after a collision Interstate 27 Monday afternoon.
APD said the officer was blocking traffic on the highway while emergency crews cleaned the wreckage left by a vehicle hitting a light pole around noon. A driver lost control of their vehicle after averting a collision and spun out, avoiding the collision with the car directly ahead but instead striking the police unit.
The officer was inside the unit at the time of the wreck.
The collision blocked traffic near I-27/45th Avenue for at least the next hour as both occupants were removed from the scene. APD called all injuries minor or not life-threatening.
Police said speed appears to be a factor in the incident and an investigation is ongoing.
