Police make contact with person behind concerning social video

AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - The Amarillo Police Department says there is "no evidence or indication" that the apparent sexual assault depicted in a widely shared video happened in Amarillo or was committed by a person residing in town.

Sergeant Brent Barbee said contact was made with the person who shared the video. The person told investigators the video was not his own, instead it he saw it from another individual in an online group and only shared it.

The video in question shows sexual activity involving a male and female in an unknown public location. Despite text on the video suggesting otherwise, the person police contact said the sexual acts inside the video were consensual.

The video has since been removed.

The post was shared thousands of times and resulted in a flood of calls to the Amarillo Emergency Communications Center. Police issued a statement Wednesday night saying they were aware of the video.

"When viewing social media, keep in mind that information provided may not be as presented, may be dated, or may have happened in another city or country of have previously been investigated," APD said.
