Career fair brings opportunities for young job seekers

AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - Hundreds of job seekers came dressed for success in hopes of joining teams of local companies in the area.

Multiple employment opportunities were available from all levels of employment, including full and part-time positions in technical, health care, management, customer service and many others.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Texas unemployment rate is at 4.9 % and in Amarillo the percentage of unemployment is at 3.4 %.

Workforce solutions Panhandle said the career fair brings opportunity to 300 people in Amarillo, slowly but surely decreasing the numbers of unemployment within the Panhandle.

"Jobs are out there, but employers are having a tough time to find employees to fill those jobs. With events like this, it really brings in all the job seekers in to one spot in order to open up their eyes about opportunities that they have," said Workforce Solutions Panhandle Phillip Flores.

Lauren Muckstadt with United Super Markets said it wasn't long that she was on the other side looking for a position at one of the local career fairs.

She said if it wasn't for the career fair, she wouldn't have been connected to her path now.

"I went to a job fair and met a recruiter that works for United and he told me too apply from a checker position which is what I did and I started working for the store and I moved through a few different positions and then I met with that recruiter again. He told me about that internship opportunity that they had. My internship then pushed me into the position I'm in now," she said.

Muckstadt said that career fairs like this are truly making a difference in the lives of many young adults and she hope she can offer the same opportunity that was once offered to her.
