An East Texas library has added nearly 1,000 books to its collection. The Tyler Public Library was one of three across the nation awarded in the American Library Association’s Great Books Giveaway.

Some of the books the library received are headed for the shelves in the young adult section. The others will go to Tyler Independent School District's Discipline Alternative Education Program and their Early College Program.

"This will be an opportunity to bring new current materials to both population," Linda Gray, youth services librarian, said.

Gray said the books will benefit students reading behind their grade level.

"These are books that are at a high interest and a low reading level to hopefully bring these students up," Gray said.

The library received the material from the American Library Association after applying for the Great Books Giveaway.

"You write saying what you are going to do with the large amount of material and what your different needs are," Gray said.

Library staff said they are using more than books to connect with young adults.

"We very much push a lot of our graphic novels, a lot of our books, a lot of our audio books," David Broom, Tyler Public Library administrative assistant, said.

And they hope their efforts will keep a younger generation turning the page.

"Nothing gives me greater joy than seeing a kid come in and ... they leave with stacks. They are over their head [with] stacks of books," Broom said.

Library officials said the materials they received is worth about $40,000.
