AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - Two road construction projects along Interstate 40 could affect travel beginning Wednesday, according to the City of Amarillo.
Access to I-40E at the downtown junction will be closed for the next six to eight months as crews work to expand access in the area. Drivers will instead be detoured west to Washington Street where they can turn around to merge onto I-40E.
Beginning 7 p.m. Wednesday, Soncy Street near I-40 will again be closed until Thursday morning for the installation of deck panels. Drivers will be able to merge onto east-and-westbound access roads off of Soncy but will not be able to pass underneath the bridge.
Thursday, demolition of the westbound I-40 bridge over Ross Street will begin and continue through the early part of next week. The stretch of road underneath the bridge will be closed as construction continues, but officials say drivers will still be able to access a single lane on the frontage roads in each direction.
