OCHILTREE COUNTY, TX (KFDA) -

Authorities say a massive fire near Perryton this week heavily damaged or destroyed more than 318,000 acres of land and at least a few residences, including the home of John R. Erickson, the author who penned the popular children's book series Hank The Cowdog.

Family members say Erickson and his wife were able to escape the fire without harm. The M-Cross Ranch is located about 25 miles southwest of Perryton and just north of the Canadian River Valley.

As of Wednesday morning, Erickson's son said his family is still surveying damage to property and livestock on the ranch. Earlier information received by KCBD and KFDA stated that Erickson's cattle were lost.

KCBD reports Erickson and his wife are now staying at their home in Perryton.

Officials say the 'Perryton Fire' is 75 percent contained as of Thursday afternoon.
