Amarillo cheerleader video creates public outrage

AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - A video posted on social media Saturday has many Amarillo residents outraged.

It shows a young woman who appears to be wearing an Amarillo High School cheerleader's uniform performing a chant that spells out an inappropriate racial slur that starts with 'N'.

Amarillo Independent School District spokeswoman, Holly Shelton released the following statement on the video:

"AISD students who choose to participate in extracurricular activities, such as athletics and cheerleading, are held to a higher standard for their behavior outside of the school day. These expectations are set forth in AISD's code of ethical behavior for extracurricular activities, and every participating student agrees to be bound by these higher expectations. AISD does not ever condone racist language or behavior. Because this situation involves an individual student, federal student privacy laws prevent us from commenting further."

NewsChannel 10 will be following up with this story in the coming week.
