AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) -

Amarillo firefighters battled a mobile home fire Thursday evening that has claimed the life of an elderly woman.

The fire began around 10:30 Thursday night in the 4700 block of Hawk Lane.

Crews extinguished the flames inside the home but continued to search for hidden fire because the blaze had extended underneath the mobile home as well.

Amarillo Fire Capt. Larry Davis said they found Wanda Sanner inside a bedroom in the rear of the home. She was taken to the hospital, where she later died.

The fire was under control around midnight.

The Amarillo Fire Marshal's Office determined the origin of the fire was the back porch and that ashes improperly discarded from a wood-burning stove caused the fire.

Damage from the fire is estimated at around $60,000.
