CANYON, TX (KFDA) -

West Texas A&M University announced Tuesday that Hunter Hughes will take over as head coach for the 2017-2018 season.

Hughes joins WTAMU after spending the past nine seasons as the defensive coordinator for Colorado State Pueblo (NCAA-Div II). Hughes is credited with reestablishing the school's program in 2008 and consistently fielding formidable defensive units for the ThunderWolves.

CSU's defense finished in Top-20 and Top-25 lists for several defensive categories under Hughes' guidance, including a strong 2011 season in which the team led the nation in points per game allowed and interceptions.

NewsChannel 10's Brianna Mellon is in Canyon for today's announcement and will have more during the News @ 6 and News @10.

WTAMU began its coaching search in November after parting ways with Mike Nesbitt, who led the Buffs to a 25-17 record during four seasons with the team. The Buffs finished 6-5 in 2016.
