COLLINGSWORTH COUNTY, TX (KFDA) -
While it was a windy and cold Wednesday night in Wellington, that didn't stop a small group of students and community members from holding this special candlelight vigil.
With clasped hands and closed eyes, all that stood what a lantern representing peace for Iraan-Sheffield ISD.
"We heard about the Iraan incident and we kind of wanted to do something for their community and we thought it would be a good idea to have this prayer vigil," said Wellington student and First United Methodist Church youth member, Steve Rodriguez.
The incident happened last Friday. An 18-wheeler collided with a school bus carrying Iraan cheerleaders. Several were injured in the crash and cheer sponsor, Liz Pope, was killed.
"It affected all communities around it, " said Wellington student and First United Methodist Church youth member, Emma Jones. "It reminds us how important life is, how short it is and that could have happened to anyone."
So, instead of focusing on the big game coming up against Iraan -- these Wellington students prayed for the Iraan community and students as they get through this tough time.
"They're a small community and we're also a small community so we know how close everyone is to each other," said Rodriguez.
But the support doesn't end here. The school has been collecting donations all this week for The Braves. At Friday's semi finals game, the cheerleaders will present the gift of donations, while the Wellington band gives a special performance at half time.
"Week in and week out, we have sponsors, teachers, coaches that are involved in activities and sometimes we take it for granted and this puts it back into perspective," said Wellington ISD Superintendent, Kurt Ashmore. "It's definitely a tragedy and out heart just goes out to Iraan. This vigil helps send some prayers their way."
If you would like to make a donation, you can call the Wellington School office at 806 447-3172.
