Babysitter jailed on felony charge following child's death

POTTER COUNTY, TX (KFDA) - Authorities say an area woman charged with child abuse after the 4-month-old she was babysitting died has turned herself over to police.

Celia Camacho, 25, was booked into the Potter County jail around 6:00 p.m. Friday on an injury to a child charge, a second degree felony.

On Aug. 12, Camacho placed a 911 call after she found the child unconscious and not breathing. Paramedics arrived at the home and transported the baby to a hospital, but the child was pronounced dead around 30 minutes after the initial call was made.

Sergeant Brent Barbee with the Amarillo Police Department said investigators were initially unable to determine the cause of the child's death, but the results of an autopsy performed shortly after warranted a follow-up investigation into Camacho.

The results of the autopsy were not made immediately available.

The 47th District Attorney's Office accepted charges against Camacho earlier this week.
