AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - Authorities say nearly a dozen acres of land were destroyed in northeast Amarillo due to a grass fire Wednesday afternoon.
Captain Larry Davis said the blaze began after a lawnmower became clogged with grass and eventually caught fire near NE 22nd and Avenue J. The fire quickly spread to a nearby field and caused a high-level of concern due to strong winds and the number of structures in the area.
Davis said 11 units from Potter County and the city department were able to contain the fire in just under an hour.
The individual riding the lawnmower was not injured.
