AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) -

Hundreds of families will be taking their kids Trick-or-Treating Monday night but before you hit the streets, Amarillo Police has a few do's and don't's to ensure a safe and fun Halloween.

The A-P-D would like to remind everyone to try and plan out a trick or treating route. If you have young children have an adult accompany them. If you have older children that will be going out without a parent or trusted adult make sure that you know their route.

Anyone out trick or treating should carry a flashlight, glow stick, or wear reflective clothing or tape. Most neighborhoods have sidewalks so they should be used for everyone’s safety. If a street does not have a sidewalk you should walk on the left side of the street facing traffic.

Always look both ways before crossing the street and try to cross at a corner or intersection. Some residents will not be home or will not be participating in Halloween. They should have their porch light turned off to let everyone know not to approach their houses.

The Amarillo Police Department would like to stress to everyone not to cut across people yards. This will keep you safe from tripping over decorations and also not damage anyone else’s property.

It is also recommended for all parents to check over the candy before you let your children eat it. If it looks like it has been tampered with in any way throw it out.

This is also a good time to remind drivers to use extra caution during this time. Although parents will be with them, sometimes children get excited and forget to look both ways before crossing the street.

The Amarillo Police Department hopes that everyone has a fun and safe Halloween.
