AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - Authorities say two people were killed and another one airlifted to an area hospital following a major collision on SH-87 north of Amarillo Thursday morning.
The Texas Department of Public Safety says the driver of a pickup truck, identified as 49-year-old Jack Jaeger, of Kansas, was southbound on the highway when he crossed the center median and began driving on the northbound lanes.
Jaegar crashed directly into a pickup truck driven by Barry Proffitt, of Amarillo. Proffitt, 61, and Jaeger were both pronounced dead on scene.
A passenger inside Proffitt's vehicle was airlifted to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Sergeant Cindy Barkley says Jaeger's vehicle was engulfed in flames shortly after the collision. Barkley says the reason Jaeger turned into opposite lanes of traffic remains unknown and the crash is still under investigation.
