DEAF SMITH, TX (KFDA) -

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is investigating a two-vehicle crash that occurred on US-385 in Deaf Smith County, resulting in the death of one person.

On Monday, Oct. 17, at approximately 9:50 a.m., Alfred Sanders, 63, of Hereford, was driving a 2005 Mack truck-tractor towing a semi-trailer.

DPS troopers said he was traveling northbound on US-385 approximately one mile north of Hereford when he was legally stopped in a construction site by road construction personnel.

Maxwell Middleton, 51, of Hereford was driving a 2016 Ford F-150 pickup truck northbound on US-385.

Troopers said he approached the stopped truck-tractor and semi-trailer but failed to stop and crashed into the back of the semi-trailer.

Middleton was transported to Hereford Regional Medical Center where he later died.

Sanders was also transported to Hereford Regional Medical Center where he was treated and released.

According to the DPS, Middleton and Sanders were not wearing seat belts.

Officials report road conditions were dry and no other vehicles were involved.

The reason for Middleton failing to stop is unknown at this time.
