AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - Going the extra mile to help those in need is something Delelisia Wilson knows all too well.
"As a child, I always remember my parents just being hands on with children that need," said Wilson.
And it's something seen too often in North Amarillo, children in need of clothing to get through the season. So, Wilson's family kicked off their own coat drive.
"Our community has really come together to help us do this," said Wilson. "Without them, I don't think it would be as strong."
Word about the Wilson coat drive spread fast in north Amarillo. The family already has a list of teens and children in need of a coat for the approaching cold temperatures.
"We don't fill out applications, we don't qualify you," said Keith Grays, publicity chair for the coat drive. "We just need assess and God sends the rest."
Keith Grays quickly joined with the Wilson family to help with their mission.
"We're that right arm for those kids," said Grays. "We don't want them to be embarrassed to call us for help. We're going to be there for those kids."
Friday evening, the family started collecting coats, sweaters, and vest at 707 Polk Street. They expect over 100 people to help with the drive to make sure children stay warm in the coming weeks and months.
"It's to help our community, help the kids in the community," said Wilson.
They will be collecting coats all this month and will start passing them out next week. If you need a coat, call Delvin's at 806 803 9112.
