WTAMU hits 'Top-5' again, survey highlights campus safety

CANYON, TX (KFDA) - Parents worried about the safety of their first year Buff can breathe a little easier.

According to a new survey released by SafeWise, there are only four college towns in the country safer than Canyon, home of West Texas A&M University. Canyon ranked No. 5 out of 30 college communities in the security company's yearly analysis.

The report highlighted Canyon's high quality of life and low crime rate as the basis for its ranking.

Its series of community festivals hosted in the city's vibrant downtown square, commitment to educational excellence, and access to Palo Duro Canyon State Park helped make Canyon one of Livability's 10 Best Small Towns in the country.

Of course, the student services offered on campus also boosted the school's ranking. WT's Campus Safety and Security division offers students information on environmental health and access to an emergency response team.

SafeWise says it uses data from most recent FBI report to rank the cities, all of which have a population of at least 10,000 people.

Towns in Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan and New Hampshire placed higher than Canyon.
