AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - Authorities report finding more than 44 pounds of heroin during a traffic stop in Potter County earlier this week.
The Texas Department of Public Safety pulled over a vehicle on Interstate 40 near Amarillo Tuesday for a traffic violation. The responding trooper reported finding the narcotics in several cellophane and tape-wrapped packages inside of a false compartment in the car.
DPS valued the drugs at $5.6 million.
Joe Laura-Meridia, 31, and Jose Morales-Rittinger, 31, were arrested and charged with felony possession of a controlled substance. Both were booked into the Potter County jail.
Troopers believe the drugs were being transported from New Mexico to Chicago.
