AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - Amarillo police say an 11-year-old boy was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after the vehicle he was traveling was struck by a car apparently racing down the street.
Around 10:30 p.m. Sunday, authorities believe 20-year-old Jose Herrera was intoxicated and driving at a high rate of speed down Amarillo Boulevard when he hit the pickup's passenger side, causing the bed of the truck and cab to separate. The young passenger was ejected from the vehicle and transported to the hospital in critical condition.
The driver of the pickup, 53-year-old Leopoldo Ortega, was uninjured. His relation to the injured child was not immediately known.
Herrera and his passenger, Eybar Gallardo, were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injures. Police have already issued Gallardo, a minor, a citation for alcohol consumption.
Herrera was apparently racing another driver at the time of the wreck. The Amarillo Police Department is still searching for the driver of a white Ford Mustang with blue racing stripes who left the scene.
Anyone with information about the incident or the other Mustang involved is asked to call Amarillo Crime Stoppers at 374-4400.
