AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) -

Hundreds of Amarillo residents gathered this afternoon to pay their respects to officer Justin Scherlen as he returned to Amarillo.

Scherlen's body was driven back from New Mexico and passed by Cadillac Ranch around 2:30 p.m. Officers lead the way on I-40 as he passed through Amarillo.

Hundreds, maybe even close to a thousand people, were off the side of the highway and on bridges holding flags and saluting Officer Scherlen.

He died Thursday while on a family trip in new Mexico.

Police have not released the cause of death.

There will be an evening candlelight vigil for Officer Scherlen on Sunday at the Potter County Courthouse.

There will be some white candles available for the public.

Everyone is encouraged to attend and honor our local hero.
