Officer injured during Wednesday morning traffic stop

AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - Authorities say an Amarillo police officer was injured during a traffic stop following a getaway attempt by a man with several outstanding warrants.

The officer reportedly stopped Carlos Benitez, 28, just after midnight Wednesday near SE 10th and Vernon. Benitez, who has seven outstanding city warrants, was asked to step out of the vehicle but refused to comply, officials said.

Police say Benitez attempted to leave the scene with the young passenger inside his vehicle while talking to the responding officer. The officer reached inside Benitez's vehicle to try and remove the keys from the ignition and was struck, then swept away, as Benitez left the scene.

The officer fell from the car and suffered minor injuries. He was treated at a local hospital and released.

Benitez was later found inside of Walmart on I-40 and Grand and booked into the Potter County Detention Center on an aggravated assault of a public servant charge and the outstanding warrants.
