Body found in lake ID'd as young female

AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - Special Crimes has identified a body found at T-Anchor Lake Wednesday morning as a young female, but did not confirm the victim as the child who disappeared from a nearby motel on Tuesday.

An autopsy will be performed Thursday in Lubbock. An investigation is ongoing.

The Amarillo Police Department's Dive Team discovered the body during the search for 7-year-old Alexis Wartena, a young girl with autism who disappeared from La Kiva Motel Tuesday afternoon. The playa lake is located just north of the motel.

Police say the Wartena family had stopped to rest from travel, and Alexis disappeared from the motel around 5 p.m. Multiple agencies quickly convened at the motel, located near Interstate 40 and Quarter Horse Drive, to assist in the search. The effort quickly focused on the lake and the land around it before spreading to to the opposite side of I-40 Tuesday evening.

The search was suspended Wednesday afternoon.

The Dive Team was conducting another underwater search Wednesday morning as rescue efforts continued, but has since left the area. Police notified the Wartena family of the discovery.

Anyone with information on Alexis Wartena is asked to call 378-4248.

Management at the Kiva reports contributions for the family can be made at Citizens' Bank on South Georgia at Interstate 27.
