PORTALES, NM (KFDA) - A Portales police officer is recovering after being shot on a routine traffic stop.

Officers pulled a vehicle over Monday evening and noticed a man they were looking for was inside.

While trying to take the man into custody, several people in the car took off on foot and a struggle broke out.

Police say the suspect had a warrant out for his arrest.

The officer was shot during the struggle and has been airlifted to a Lubbock hospital. Police say his injury is considered non-life threatening at this time.

Officials say the name of the officer will not be released until an investigation is complete.
