AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - Amarillo police are searching for a man who was involved in a standoff Tuesday afternoon.
Police said 43-year-old Aaron Jones ran away from an officer who recognized him for being wanted for an outstanding felony parole warrant and failing to register as a sex offender.
The officer was originally following up on a report of a missing man from the Houston area seen in the 200 block of Northwest 15th.
That officer found the missing person and a suspect believed to be Jones in a car that was having mechanical problems.
When the police officer approached the car, the missing person said he needed help.
Jones then exited the vehicle and headed towards Palo Duro Housing, ignoring the officers commands and entered the rear of the residence.
The missing person then told police he was being held against his will.
Police were informed that Jones is usually armed, so the APD SWAT team, APD negotiators and additional staff were called to the scene to assist.
After several unsuccessful attempts to contact the individual, the SWAT team deployed several rounds of chemical irritant into the residence. Police then entered and discovered no one was inside.
Officers believe the suspect had exited the front of the residence shortly after coming in the back door and before additional officers could respond.
Jones is described as having violent tendencies and could be considered armed and dangerous. He is Black, 5'11 and 135 pounds.
Anyone with information on his location is asked to contact Amarillo Crime Stoppers at 374-4400.
The incident remains under investigation as to whether other criminal offenses have occurred.
