AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - Amarillo Special Crimes is investigating a ditch in west Amarillo where possible human remains were found Wednesday, Potter County Sheriff Brian Thomas said.

Officials say a contract worker was picking up trash near Indian Hills Rd around 11:30 when he spotted the remains. The worker was able to flag down a Potter County deputy who was near the area.

"At this point in time, we just have remains which is basically going to be bones, " said Sergeant BJ Chester with the Potter County Sheriff's Office and Amarillo Special Crimes. "I can't narrow it down to an exact time frame, but the remains have been out here for quite a while."

Sergeant Chester says they plan to treat this case like a homicide, even though they're not classifying it as one.

"It's better to work it worse case scenario, that way we don't miss anything," said Chester.

Until further testing, investigators say they don't have a lot to go on, but they know this will be a lengthy process before there's more concrete information.

"We will go back and look at any outstanding missing persons cases that are in our area first," said Chester. "Once that's done and we don't have any kind of match there then we start working our way out."

Investigators plan on being out at the scene Thursday morning to gather more evidence.
