AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - UPDATE:  One person is dead and another injured after a major car crash on Highway 60 near Highland Park.

48 year old Clarito Ortiz, driving a 2002 Dodge Caravan and 39 year old Jason Juvenal, driving a 2003 Chevrolet Venture eastbound on US highway 60 behind the Dodge Caravan. The two vehicles collided forcing the Chevy into the center median and then back across the eastbound lanes and into the ditch.

The Chevrolet continued through a barbed wire fence and landed on a set of rail road tracks where it then caught fire and completely burned. This fire also caused a minor grass fire which officials tell us was quickly put out. Juvenal was able to get out of the burning vehicle and was transported to the hospital where he is being treated for his injuries.

The Dodge van was also forced off of the roadway into the south ditch where it struck a pipe fence and rolled over causing the death of the driver Clarito Ortiz, who was pronounced dead on scene by the Potter County Justice of the Peace, Richard Herman..

One lane of traffic on Highway 60 Eastbound was shutdown as DPS cleared the area.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation. The road conditions were dry and no other vehicles were involved. Juvenal and Ortiz were both wearing seat-belts at the time of the crash.
