AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - Texas state troopers say they uncovered a large amount of heroin during a traffic stop earlier this week.

At around 4:45 Tuesday afternoon, troopers stopped an SUV traveling on I-40 near Conway in Carson County.

While searching the vehicle, troopers say they found several plastic-wrapped packages of heroin inside luggage.

All together, troopers say the heroin weighs nearly ten pounds, and is valued at more than $1.24 million.

The driver and passenger, 23 year-old Cristina Gomez and 33 year-old Ignacio Castro, both of Phoenix, Ariz., were booked into the Carson County jail, facing felony charges for possession of a controlled substance.

Troopers believe the drugs were being taken from Phoenix to Charleston, Ill.
