Traffic stop leads to recovery of stolen weapon

AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - A traffic stop in north Amarillo leads police to finding a weapon that has been missing for ten years.

At around 10:00 Sunday night, officers say they stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation in the 800 block of North Polk Street.

After discovering that the driver, 49 year-old LT Smith, had an outstanding municipal court warrant, officers say they approached the vehicle and saw a silver handgun in the floorboard.

Officers say further investigation led them to discover the weapon was reported stolen in a home burglary in 2006.

Smith was taken to the Potter County jail on the municipal warrant, and police say the weapon was taken for evidence before it will be returned to the owner.
