UPDATE: The Hernandez family confirmed 8 month old Penelope has passed away. The Tulia Fire Volunteer Fire Department is still collecting donations for the family.

TULIA, TX (KFDA) - The Tulia Volunteer Fire Department is raising money for one of their volunteers who has a very sick little girl.

8-month-old Penelope Hernandez is suffering from a respiratory virus and has been in the ICU for the past two months. Two weeks ago, she was transferred from Northwest Texas Hospital to a hospital in Houston for treatment.

The fire department sold pulled pork sandwiches to help the Hernandez family with medical costs Sunday afternoon. Dozens of Tulia residents came to support the family -- something the fire department is very proud of.

"I think the community really sees the need here because the medical bills are going to be tremendous in a situation like this," said Tulia Volunteer Fire Department Chief Johnny Daniels. "The community really pulls together. It's a great deal to see. We just ask that everyone pray for the family."

Chief Daniels says the department raised a little more than $7,000 for the Hernandez family just on Sunday.

They are continuing to raise money on a go-fund me page. There is also a love fund set up for the family at Centennial Bank in Tulia.
