AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - Edgar D. Mitchell, a Hereford-born astronaut and the sixth person to walk on the moon, has died. He was 85.

CBS's Charlie Kaye confirmed Mitchell's death Friday, exactly 45 years after Mitchell and two other NASA astronauts made their lunar landing as part of Apollo 14.

Mitchell was aboard the Apollo 14 mission that went to the Moon in 1971, along with astronauts Alan Shepard and Stuart Roosa. The shuttle launched on January 31 and returned to Earth nine days later.

The Palm Beach Post reports Mitchell died late Thursday in West Palm Beach, where he resided. 

Famed NASA astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, tweeted his condolences Friday.

Mitchell was born on Sep. 17, 1930 in Hereford, Texas.
