Texans for Responsible Marijuana Policy push for decriminalization

Amarillo, TX - A group leading a statewide initiative to decriminalize marijuana is educating local advocates about influencing state policy.

Texans for Responsible Marijuana Policy met with those local advocates at the Amarillo Southwest Library Saturday afternoon to inform and discuss how to effectively get state lawmakers to decriminalize marijuana in Texas.

The group said it hope informing citizens and lawmakers will open the doors for sensible marijuana policy discussion in the upcoming legislative races.

"Make sure that you're educated on the subject," said Jax Finkel, the executive director of Texas NORML. "Connect with your local chapter, and connect with us if you need some resources so that we can help prepare you to go out there and have these conversations, which are very important for patients and people who are being criminalized for possession of a plant."

"All you have to do is look to Colorado," said Ryan Brown, a partner for Blackburn and Brown. "Short road trip away, it's been legalized for a few years now and they're making money hand over fist. The education system is better and people aren't getting locked up and wasting money on that. There's really no down sides. There's no downsides to decriminalization, only downsides for criminalization."
