HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

An expert on East Asian military history at The University of Southern Mississippi said North Korea's claim Wednesday that it detonated a hydrogen bomb in a test is a part of a "pattern of behavior" by the communist regime that bears watching by the U.S. and its allies.

Kenneth M. Swope, the Gen. Buford Blount professor of military history at USM, said North Korea's claims of successfully testing a small hydrogen bomb might be bluster, "but we have to be careful not to disregard it entirely, because at some point, this bluster could well turn into reality."

Experts have not confirmed whether the test involved a hydrogen bomb, but it was condemned by the U.S., Britain, Japan and China.

It was Korea's first nuclear weapons test explosion in three years.
