TxDOT's ramp reversal project a success

Amarillo, TX -  Amarillo shoppers may notice traffic around I-40 and Soncy is moving a lot better. TxDOT spokesperson Paul Braun says it's all thanks to their ramp reversal project.

"When you're traveling westbound I-40 and you want to exit to Soncy, you're exiting much farther back and the frontage road are wider," said Braun."Coming from the west, you no longer have to exit at Soncy to get to the mall and go through that traffic light, you can exit right after Soncy and get off the freeway and go right into the mall parking lot."

The project wrapped up the day before Thanksgiving, just in time for the heavy holiday shopping season.

"We have seen it moving so much better this holiday season and we've heard from the traveling public how much they like it," said Braun.

Businesses along Soncy road continue to pop up, along with concerns about future traffic problems. But TxDOT says its holiday won't last long, with new plans beginning in January.

"That includes rebuilding the bridges that go over Soncy at I-40 so we can fit more traffic underneath those bridges," said Braun. "We're also talking about getting new stop lights that will be synchronized with each other better to help get the traffic flowing much better than it is now."

The extra traffic is bringing extra police patrols to Soncy. Corporal Jerry Neufeld says drivers need to slow down and remember to be courteous to others on the road.
