AMARILLO - An armed Amarillo resident believed to be suicidal was shot by police Sunday morning, according to the Amarillo Police Department.
Police identified the resident as 31-year-old Mark Ramirez, who later died at a hospital.
The officers involved in the incident are currently on administrative leave, per department policy. Officials did not say how many officers are on leave, but said Sunday afternoon an investigation is ongoing.
The officers were dispatched to a home on the 800 block of Travis St. around 10:30. The department says its officers were informed Ramirez was suicidal and potentially armed.
When Ramirez opened the door, "he had a gun in his hand and began to move it in the direction of the officers," APD said. It was then that Ramirez was shot. Officers on scene administered first aid until Ramirez was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
An autopsy on Ramirez will be performed Tuesday in Lubbock.
The Special Crimes unit with the department is leading the investigation. Police are asking anyone with more information on the incident to call 806-378-9468.
