Amarillo, TX - The Eveline Rivers Christmas Project aims to give 8,000 area children in need a gift this year.
Saturday, Xcel Energy helped them reach that goal. Xcel employees raised more than $12,000 to buy gifts for the project.
"In the end it's the kids who really don't have much on a day to day basis, and as I was telling someone earlier, this kind of thing doesn't necessarily solve their problems but for that day, it changes things," said Wes Reeves, a spokesperson for Xcel.
Companies like Toys R Us, Khol's and PetSmart also donated gifts, including bikes and stuffed animals.
Project Founder Eveline Rivers said donations are not the only need this year. She is also in need of hundreds of volunteers to help deliver all the presents. "Next Saturday at 9 a.m., we need everybody that can come with a vehicle to come here to help us deliver. Because we deliver these gifts to the children's homes," said Rivers.
Last year, around 1,600 volunteers helped deliver presents. If you would like to help next Saturday, deliveries begin at 9 in the morning. All you have to do is show up to the Eveline Rivers Christmas Workshop at 314 S. Jefferson Street.
