One man dies after being hit by car

UPDATE: The Amarillo Police Department says an autopsy has been ordered by a Justice of the Peace after the man who was struck by a vehicle Wednesday died of his injuries. APD Traffic Investigation Squad continues its investigation.

AMARILLO - An Amarillo resident was hospitalized after being struck by a car near Western St. Wednesday evening, according to the Amarillo Police Department.

Officers on scene said the pedestrian, 74 year-old Robert Wayne Laster, was transported in critical condition.

Officials say Laster was crossing Olsen St. around 7:00 p.m. when he was hit by a 1999 Ford Crown Victoria. The driver, Orlando Garza, remained on scene with the victim until police arrived.

Police did not issue any citations since Laster was illegally crossing the street by not using a crosswalk. Garza was also believed to be obeying the speed limit.

Garza and three other passengers in the vehicle were uninjured.

A further investigation into the incident is ongoing.
