Phone scam targets Hemphill County residents

HEMPHILL COUNTY, TX - Several Hemphill County residents are being targeted by a phone scammer demanding money.

The Hemphill County Sheriff's Office said a person is calling residents, claiming to work for the IRS.

Two different scenarios have been reported by many county residents.

1. The person calling is demanding money for the IRS.

2. They tell the victim there is a warrant out for their arrest from the Hemphill County Sheriff's Office, and if they don't send money immediately they will be arrested.

The Sheriff warns people not to give any information to scammers making these calls. He said if you chose to send money, there is little they can do to help you get it back.

The IRS will never contact people in this manner, or by telephone.
