Amarillo Police Department recognized volunteers

AMARILLO, TX - Amarillo Police Department held its annual volunteer appreciation luncheon Thursday at Youngblood's Cafe.

The luncheon was held to express appreciation to the volunteers for the time and energy they donate to assist the Police Department.

The luncheon honored Dave Barnett with more than 22 years of daily volunteer work, as well as two other volunteers.

Most volunteers work for the Handicapped Parking Enforcement Patrol which issues citations when vehicles are in violation on local parking lots. Others also serve as chaplains and perform various duties in the Service Division, Property Unit, and Traffic Investigations Squad.

The work provided through the volunteers frees both civilian and sworn employees of the Department from administrative duties which allows them to spend more time doing work that only a full time employee or officer can do.

During the past year, the Handicapped Parking Enforcement volunteers worked over 2,500 hours and issued over 1,100 citations. A total of 3,492 hours of service through volunteers were given to support APD in 2014.

APD is currently seeking volunteers to help. If you have some time you would like to invest in helping our Police Department and the community, you can contact Sgt. Wes Hill at 378-6143 for more information.
