SW 9th Avenue reconstruction project delayed

AMARILLO, TX - Due to weather and construction-related delays, a roadway project originally scheduled for completion this month will now be likely to finish next spring.

The reconstruction of SW 9th Avenue from Coulter Street to Amarillo Boulevard began in April of this year. During construction, Atmos Energy was required to lower existing gas lines and to abandon and replace a line. Crews are currently removing the abandoned line and anticipate completion within the next week.

"As a result, the roadway contractor may not be able to complete a portion of the north half of the roadway before cold weather begins and the paving season ends. Various construction activities will take place in this area in the coming weeks, but the south half of the roadway is currently open and will remain open," says Assistant City Engineer Kyle Schniederjan.

Schniederjan also says, "Construction will continue as long as temperatures allow; however, if a portion of the roadway is not completed, provisions will be made to make the roadway as safe and use-able as possible during the winter months."

He adds that provisions will be made to facilitate access to adjacent businesses and snow removal as needed during the winter months.

Construction will resume around mid April when the spring temperatures allow paving to begin.
