City Council appoints interim manager

AMARILLO - The search for a new city manager is over, at least for now.

At tonight's City Council meeting, Terry Childers was unanimously appointed to serve the role of Interim City Manager. Childers previously served as Oklahoma City's City Manager from 1986-1989.

He is expected to officially take office Wednesday.

Childer's appointment to the position comes nearly five years after current City Manager Jarrett Atkinson was chosen for the job. Atkinson served as the interim city manager for six months in 2010 before being chosen as the full-time replacement on Nov. 23 the same year.

This past June, two of the three newly-elected members of Amarillo City Council called for the resignation of Atkinson and several others within the City of Amarillo. That decision was later rescinded, however, Atkinson unexpectedly submitted his letter of resignation last month.
