Amarillo, TX - The Beans and Cornbread Luncheon continues to assist the homeless.
The luncheon is a fundraiser that helps those struggling to feed their families, keep their homes, or find safe shelters. The luncheon is based on the reality that one can sustain on a meal of "beans and cornbread".
Each year the Beans and Cornbread Committee partners with Desperado's catering where Owner, Richard Dyer, provides the lunch for the cost of food. The committee said each year the need becomes greater to assist those who are struggling.
The money raised during the event is divided equally among ten different agencies who help those who need food, shelter, or are victims of domestic violence. Sara Shook, the Planning Committee Chairman for the Beans and Cornbread Luncheon, says the event last year helped around 10,00 people.
Shook says the committee has not counted all of the donations from the event but says so far they have raised $50,000 to benefit the homeless.
According to Amarillo's Community Development Department, a survey taken in October shows our area currently has 653 individuals who are homeless,150 of them are children.
This year's guest speaker is country singer/songwriter Jimmy Wayne, a former homeless teen whose songs and story highlight his mission to bring awareness to kids who age out of the foster system and become homeless.
