Body found in Amarillo playa lake

Amarillo, TX - The initial reports said someone had gone under water. About two hours later, a body was found in the playa lake commonly known as "Horse Shoe" lake off of I-27 and Bell in south Amarillo.

Calls of a possible drowning were sent to several area agencies including Amarillo's Fire Department, APD, Randall County Sheriff's Office, and DPS.

"An individual had been riding a horse around the perimeter," said Jerry Neufeld with the Amarillo Police Department.

Neufeld says the rider was also with a friend. While the two were riding, the friend look back at the rider and noticed he was nowhere to be seen.

"We did locate the horse in the water," said Neufeld. "They were able to cut some stands of barbed wire to get the horse out."

Finding the horse gave officials a general location of where the rider might be. Larry Davis with the Amarillo Fire Department said a witness on scene saw someone go underwater and went into the lake to try to find him, but said the person was too far out in the water. No other witness reports were given to police.

A dive team began a search with the fire department's guidance. The victim's body was soon found in 15 feet of water about 40 feet from the shoreline.

"At this point there's absolutely no sign of foul play, it just appears to be a total public accident," said Neufeld .

As of Wednesday evening, officials had not released the name of the victim until family members were notified. Randall County Judge Erin Houdashell responded to the scene. APD says Houdashell will order the autopsy.
