UPDATE: Suspicious death at American Motor Inn

UPDATE: AMARILLO - A suspect for the apparent murder of a 65-year-old man at an Amarillo motel is now under arrest.

Amarillo police say Mary Elizabeth Cheatheam, 57, was booked into jail for her possible role in the death of Samuel Luke Cheatheam. The suspect is the victim's wife, according to police.

Police found Cheatheam dead inside a room at the American Motor Inn on Friday. The Special Crimes unit of the Amarillo Police Department was also called to the scene.

Preliminary autopsy results confirmed Cheatheam's death as a homicide, police said.

Online records show Mary Cheatheam was booked into the Randall County Detention Center on Friday. She remains there Monday with a bond set at $500,000.

Amarillo police are also asking anyone with any information about this incident to call the Special Crimes unit at 806-378-9468.


Amarillo, TX - Amarillo Special Crimes is investigating a suspicious death occurring at the American Motor Inn in Amarillo.

Officers were sent to the inn around 1:20 Friday afternoon on a call of a deceased man.

Special Crimes was called in to investigate because of the suspicious nature of the death.

The deceased was identified as 65-year-old Samuel Luke Cheatheam.

The case is classified as a homicide.
